Hyderabad, Feb 28 : GHMC Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain inaugurated the 7th Mayors’ Conference jointly organized by National Meat & Poultry Processing Board and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation at Green Park Hotel here on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that there was a dire need for hygienic slaughtering, processing and sale of meat and poultry products in local retail market and construction of modern slaughter houses. He hoped that the conference would look into all the issues and sensitise the Municipal officers, supervisors and workers regarding the quality issues in meat and poultry processing sectors.
The Mayor said that the NMPPB could be of great help for the small, medium and large scale industries including the local slaughter houses for hygienic slaughtering, processing and sale of meat and poultry products in local domestic shops. He thanked the Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, for sanctioning Rs. 15 crores of rupees towards modernization of slaughter Houses at Amberpet, New Bhoiguda, Ramnasthpura and Gowlipura. He further requested Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries to release the funds for the pending project of Jiyaguda Slaughter House on priority basis.
Union Secretary for Ministry of Food Processing Industries Siraj Hussain said that modernization of abbaitors should be given top priority for maintaining hygienic conditions.
GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar informed that there are six Slaughter Houses (Amberpet, New Bhoiguda, Ramnasthpura, Gowlipura, Jiyaguda (proposed) & Chengicherla) in the GHMC limits. He also informed that GHMC has 2,959 licensed retail shops pertaining to meat, beef, dressed chicken, others like egg, fish and pork and it has also been observed that 70 per cent of the peole in GHMC limits are non vegetarians.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, Principal Secretary, Animal Husbandry Department, said that that vaccinating all the animals in a single day throughout the southern States of the Country would yield good results. He informed that one-third of the eggs of India are being produced in the State of Andhra Pradesh and with 15 crore poultry population, 4.6 crore Sheep and buffalo population, the State stands second in the country.
During the conference, a report on “Greening of meat and poultry processing Sector in India” was released and MOUs have been signed between National Meat & Poultry Processing Board and Sri Venkateshwara University, Tirupathi, National Research Centre on Meat, Hyderabad.
Anuradha Prasad, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Govt. of India, Dr. B. Janardhan Reddy, Commissioner &Director, Municipal Administration, Dr. V. V. Kulkarni, Director, National Research Centre on Meat also participated in the conference. (INN)
