Hyderabad, June 30 : Deputy Leader of Opposition in Telangana Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir has strongly opposed the appointment of senior advocate K Ramakrishna Reddy as Advocate General for the State of Telangana.
In a representation made to Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao here on Monday, Shabbir Ali said Ramakrishna Reddy had openly opposed the reservation for Muslims in Andhra Pradesh.
Citing instances, he said when Andhra Pradesh Government issued a GO Ms No 33 dated 12th July, 2007, giving 5% reservation for Muslims in jobs and educational institutions, the same was challenged in the court by T Muralidhar Rao and others and it was Ramakrishna Reddy who appeared in this writ petition and objected to the reservation for Muslims. Later, a five-Judge bench of High Court by judgment dated 21st September, 2004 struck down the GO Ms No 33 on procedural lapses.
Shabbir Ali said that Ramakrishna Reddy continued his opposition to Muslim reservations on multiple occasions in both High Court and Supreme Court of India. He appeared along with other senior counsels and opposed the reservation to Muslim minorities.
"The Muslim community in the State is apprehensive that the appointment of Ramakrishna Reddy as Advocate General may cause prejudice to them. I may bring to your notice that your government had declared that it will give 12 % reservation to the Muslims in the State, but the appointment of Chief Law Officer of the State (Advocate General) is not in that direction," Shabbir Ali said. He demanded that Ramakrishna Reddy's appointment has to be reviewed and recalled to give assurance to the Muslims in the State that the TRS Government was committed to provide reservation to the community. "A person who had opposed and object to the reservation of Muslims in the State as being unconstitutional could not have been chosen as the Advocate General for the State of Telangana. This is causing immense fear and anxious moments in the entire Muslim community across the State," he said.
Shabbir Ali announced that he would approach the court if the Chief Minister fails to withdraw the appointment of Ramakrishna Reddy in the next two days. INN
