Naidu promises 24 seats for minorities in next elections

Hyderabad, September 27 INN: After making an announcement of giving 100 seats for the candidates of Backward Classes, Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday made a similar attempt to attract Muslim voters.

Addressing the party's Minority Convention at NTR Trust Bhavan, Naidu announced that the TDP would give tickets to 24 candidates belonging to minority communities during the next assembly elections. He also promised that he would personally ensure the victory of at least 15 candidates across the State. Further, he announced that the TDP would give eight per cent quota for Muslims in politics, education, employment and annual budget, if it comes to power. However, he did not elaborate how this would be done as the Congress Government was forced to reduce the Muslim quota from five to four per cent due to legal complications.

Besides repeating traditional promises of not interfering with the Muslim Personal, Naidu made specific announcements with regard to the welfare of minorities in the State. He said the annual budget for the minorities welfare would be increased to Rs 2,500 crore and a Minorities Sub-Plan would be introduced to ensure its proper utilisation. He also promised the implementation of recommendations of Justice Sachar and Justice Ranganath Mishra Commissions. He said a separate Muslim Empowerment Policy would be framed for the socio-economic development of the community.

Former MP SM Lal Jaan Basha, polit-bureau member Zahed Ali Khan, former minister N Md Farooq, former chairman Wakf Board Syed Yousuf Ali and other TDP leaders also addressed the convention.
